Llama party

Since llamas are the current hot animal around these parts our oldest wanted a llama theme for her 9th birthday.

My partner and I crafted a lot of llama themed decor items, many of which were inspired by pins on Pinterest. I thought I’d collect the projects here so if anyone is struggling with a llama theme they might find some inspiration here.

Our first move was to select colours. We didn’t entirely stick with them but we chose materials as close to these colours as we could.

Crafted Decorations

Tassel Bunting

The first item I crafted was a tassel bunting. I wrapped the wool around a piece of card around 12 times for each tassel then tied them off with the same colour wool. I then tired them at 10cm intervals.

If I made them again I’d probably mix it up a bit more with some pom poms, beads and varied the sizes of the tassels to make it a little more exciting.

Pin the Tail on the Llama

For the pin the tail on the llama game we down loaded a printable from Lovely Indeed and we loosely followed her directions for making the tails.

Making the tails provided a school holiday activity for the kids. We cut three vaguely egg shaped pieces in different sizes from each colour then mixed and matched them to make colourful tails.

The tails were perhaps a little large but did look quite fun displayed.

I whipped up a blindfold of black satin to which we stuck some large goggle eyes for a bit of fun.

The only trouble we had was with the blue tack sticking to the board. Perhaps choosing a matt finish was not the best idea.

In any case it was beautiful and the girls enjoyed pinning their tails with their goggle eyed blindfold.

We also had streamers, balloons, and table cloths in our party colours and put out some bright coloured bean bags that the venue had available for a chill zone.

Llama Costume

As one of the party activities we set up a little photobooth with some llama photo booth props we picked up. Then we made a llama costume from a box that we thought the girls might like to wear for fun pictures.

Again it was heavily derivative of something I found on pinterest. While I cut and assembled it my partner did all the painting and decorating.

Party Bags

Llama Bags

Of course the party bags themselves had to be llamas, particularly after we saw a lot of cute ones on pinterest.

I has initially thought I’d cut and assemble the bags myself, but noticed the ones I’d seen on pinterest were purchased bags with a llama heads attached.

I drew a llama head then ran it through my Scan n Cut, which really made the job a lot faster. If we’d have cut them by hand I can only imagine how long it would have taken. As it was we cut out 15 llama heads in a matter of minutes.

Then to help keep the kids busy during school holidays we just had to draw faces on them.

Stuck them to the bags and drew blankets onto their backs for a bit of colour.

They turned out pretty cute.

Colouring Books

This is probably when I started to over-craft this event. I wanted the kids to have more than just lollies in their party bags. I collected several pictures of llamas and drew up line drawings and collected them into a little book.

I used the Lovely Indeed llama pic for the cover.

We bought some little packets of pencils and popped them into the party bags.

The most difficult thing about this project was stapling them together. Apparently staplers don’t have the reach to get all the way to the centre of the book.

Llama Stuffy

I saw some super cute little llama toys on pinterest and thought they might be another cute thing to include. I drew up a llama I was happy with, cut them out of felt, sewed faces onto them and sewed them up with coloured embroidery floss and stuffed them with polyfill.

I love their cute little faces.

I haven’t had any feedback that the girls liked them but my one year old kept finding them wherever I hid them and would hold them ans sing to them.

So they were definitely a hit round my house.

Llama Food

Llama and Cactus Biscuits

I have iced maybe three things in my whole life. I have to say, I wasn’t far into the icing process when I started to regret my life choices. I should have stuck to fibre arts.

The cutters I purchased on etsy from Cookie Cutter Store. They shipped the same day and the service all round was excellent.

I tried two different biscuit doughs but I’m not sure I was super happy with either, but the shapes turned out very cute.

A friend recommended royal icing for biscuits. She’s a baker so actually knows about icing.

I didn’t think I’d be able to pipe the design onto the biscuits but found some edible ink markers at a local variety store that worked brilliantly.

They barely touched the biscuits at the party so sticking to my comfort zone and focus on crafting not cooking.

We’ve started planing for the young man’s birthday next year. So there may well be another post next year.
