Fairy Princess Costume DIY

Our 3 year old wanted to be a fairy princess for halloween. This costume was not particularly eco as it involves a lot of plastics.

The dress is the Petit Fours pattern by Duchess and Hare. Duchess and Hare were having a closing down sale when I bought so I’m not sure how long they will remain open.

My mother had recently given me a bag of fabrics she’d been given from her sister just before I started making this dress. My daughter was taken by the purple panne so it became the basis for the dress. I bought some pink mesh to go with it as matching the purple was proving difficult.

The dress itself was not a difficult make but I had difficulty printing it to the correct size. It is designed to be made with cottons so needed a small amount of modification (i.e. the zip was dropped down and buttons added to the mesh, and since I was using a sheer fabric I lifted the front a little so it would not be revealing).

There are a lot of tutorials online for the technique I used for the wings. I didn’t use a particular one.

Firstly I printed some images of wings out on A3 paper which proved to be the right size (size 3 t-shirt for scale). Using them as a rough guide I bent wire into the approximate shape, using a thinner wire for the veins inside the wings. I then sprayed them gold as I happened to have gold spray paint. To make the shimmering wings you’ll need an iridescent cellophane. you’ll need to fold the cellophane over the wing and heat it with an iron or heat gun. I placed a towel over the cellophane and pressed it with the iron until it fused with the layer on the other side. The cellophane was then trimmed and melted with the flame from a lighter.

The crown I made was a couple of cupcake holders I sprayed gold to match and attached a strip of elastic to hold it on.
