Spongebob Squarepants Costume DIY

Our final costume for the season is a Spongebob Squarepants costume for our pre-teen. Finding an outfit that is cute but mature was a challenge. She was happy. Win! While we bought all of the pieces several were heavily altered and worth sharing how you can the same.

The head is a yellow cotton t-shirt from Best and Less. We considered several ways to transfer the face to the T, silk screening or iron on transfer. In the end I decided to hand paint the face on. I found a picture of Spongebob online and printed it out a good size. I did use a light table to help see the face through the shirt but I mostly just did my best.

I initially thought I’d make a functional tie but a faux tie worked better. I had some red satin in my stash and used an offcut of a heavy interfacing to help it keep shape. The pattern I drew from a picture I found online.

The shirt was modified from a white men’s work shirt. I began by cutting down the centre back then unpicking the shoulder seems and picking the collar from the shirt. I then drew a straight line in washable marker at right angles to the button placket and sewed the collar back on straight. I did think of leaving it like that, but the points of the collar overlapped each other. So I chose to unpick the collars band from the leaf so that I could angle the leaves a little more. I added more fabric from the shirt to the centre back to fit. I do wonder if it might have been better to make it from scratch given the amount of unpicking.

The shorts were purchased as is from Big W. They were a little lighter than Spongebob’s but fit well and she was happy. The belt was purchased as is from a Salvo’s store.
