Cake Smash

The children in my Mothers Group are now turning one, so as a celebration we arranged a cake smash for them all.

It was perhaps a foolish undertaking as children that age are not know for their co-operation.

We arranged it between us, one mum taking photographs, another decorating cakes and a third organising the balloons.

With none of us being professionals at staging photographs it was quite chaotic, but enormous fun.

The outfits used a pattern by Hello Dear Kids. The girls wore a bib front outfit with shoulder ruffles and the boys a simple nappy cover. I added the shoulder ruffles and lining to Hello Dear Kids design.

The bow ties and head bows were made from free patterns found online.

Personally I found the outfit pattern a little difficult to work with. As an advanced sewer I don’t usually find patterns difficult but there was something in the way the designer created the pattern that differs from how my mind works.

Though my biggest struggle was sizing. Two of the girls in our group are quite petite so I had thought the 6-12 month size would be suitable for them. Even so I slimmed it down a lot to get it to fit as I wanted. The boys I made in the 12 month size and the pants were even too large on the boy that is in size 2 clothing.

Children must be a lot bigger where the designer lives.

If I had my time again I’d arrange fittings of the garments rather than relying on the pattern’s sizing. My mistake.

In any case it was a fun afternoon and we got some great pics.
