Cherub Baby bottle hack/fix

I was recommended Cherub Baby by a friend who was likewise recommended by a good friend of hers. As my girl was weening and I was looking for solutions to allow her to have non water drinks such as cow’s milk and juice I checked them out.

Being strongly interested in reducing and eliminating waste, particularly plastics, I was impressed by their product range and commitment to reusable products for babies. While plastic is pretty standard across the industry for baby products Cherub Baby’s signature item uses glass for the main cup section. Protected by a silicone sleeve, that helpfully changes colour when heated, the glass bottle is guaranteed not to break.

My first purchase was of their “Sippy, Straw and Teat Universal Silicone Stretch Lid Kit”. Given we have an over abundance of cups and mugs I preferred to try to see if we could fulfil our needs while using what we already have. When the order arrived I was disappointed to see all the plastic packaging. They weren’t into ecology as much as I had thought they were. However I understand many retailers require certain types of packaging before they will stock products so this was perhaps outside their control.

I am still very excited by the potential of this design. I love how the silicone can stretch to fit almost any cup. Into the silicone sleeve you pop the part of your choice, be it the straw or sippy parts provided or a teat you may have from their other products. Having straw setup on her water bottle my girl struggled understanding she needed to tip the cup up for the sippy top so we tend to go with the straw. Upon her using the product we found another issue. My daughter can easily push the top inside the cup. I’m not sure if this is a just her situation or if most children would do the same. In any case the top is very easy to dislodge from the silicone sleeve.

As she needed to be constantly monitored with the product it was not useful to our needs. I keep them in her backpack for use when out and about.

Our second purchase was their 150ml glass cups which did fulfil our needs and I probably should have just got to start with. However I’ve also had trouble with these. Again, this might be just us as we hand wash and don’t have a dishwasher. In the straw set there are small parts, and it was just a few weeks before one of the tiny pieces that connects the straw section to the top disappeared down the drain. I contacted customer service at Cherub Baby and they were unable to help me with a replacement part without buying another whole straw assembly, so I had to use the one part washing and switching it between bottles. Then my daughter threw a cup down onto the tiles and cracked the lid. True to their guarantee the glass remained perfectly safe, thank goodness, but the plastic screw cup cracked. So I had only the one cap to share between bottles.

My parents in law visited last weekend and kindly helped by doing the dishes and sadly the remaining connector and one of the straws went missing, presumed down the drain.

So my partner came up with a fix.

I cut the joiner in thirds and fitted it into the straw section of the cap. It slides in easily.

The straw then fits snugly into the other end.

Then you’re ready to go!

It occasionally slips out of the top, but the other connector did that from time to time anyway. I may add come texture to the tube to give it more grip.

Overall it’s a great solution. I may need to but more replacement parts anyway but I’ve started using my daughters b-box water bottle for juice as the newer model can be taken apart for cleaning, and my daughter doesn’t seem as keen on milk as she was to start with so it may not be necessary.
